On May 27, a reporter visited Liaoning Tianyi Industrial Co., Ltd., located in the Panjin High-Tech Industrial Development Zone. Entering the spacious production and assembly workshop, which spans 9,600 square meters, five top-drive drilling rigs—ranging in weight from 11 to 18 tons—stood prominently in the work area. Beside these “heavyweights,” several technicians were busily conducting comprehensive functional tests.
“These top drive systems, soon to roll off the production line, have orders from Bohai Drilling, Haihua Group, and Russian clients. With supply chains for raw materials and logistics becoming increasingly smooth, we are operating at full capacity—363 employees working overtime while strictly adhering to provincial and municipal epidemic prevention measures—in an effort to make up for the losses caused by the pandemic,” said Wu Zhiqiang, the company’s deputy general manager.
In the oil extraction industry, drilling is one of the critical processes. As a national-level high-tech enterprise, Tianyi Industrial has successfully independently developed the world’s first low-temperature top drive, the world’s first vehicle-mounted variable-frequency top drive, and a rotary steerable drilling system. With 22 national patents to its name, the company has broken the bottleneck that had long constrained Chinese drilling teams from expanding into overseas markets.
“We have now become a manufacturer and service provider of top drive systems that boast a comprehensive product lineup, diverse models, and cutting-edge technology, fully demonstrating the strength and confidence of China’s ‘intelligent manufacturing’ capabilities,” Liu Lin, director of the Technology R&D Center at Tianyi Industrial, told reporters. The company offers more than ten top drive products tailored to well depths and temperatures ranging from 2,000 to 9,000 meters underground. These products not only play a leading role in domestic oilfields such as those operated by CNPC, Sinopec, and CNOOC, but are also exported to countries including Russia, Kazakhstan, Venezuela, Sudan, and Indonesia. Last year, the Shunbei Eagle‑1 well in the Shunbei Oilfield, drilled under Sinopec’s auspices, reached a final depth of 8,588 meters, setting a new record for the deepest onshore well in Asia and marking China’s mastery of world‑class ultra‑deep‑well drilling technology. “The top drive system used in that operation was manufactured right here in Panjin—‘Made by Tianyi,’” said Wu Zhiqiang.
Since the beginning of this year, Tianyi Industrial has focused on technological innovation to refine its product portfolio and enhance service quality, targeting major oil-producing regions abroad and aggressively expanding into overseas markets. Wu Zhiqiang told reporters that the company’s annual production capacity has reached 50 units, enabling it to achieve product line standardization and large-scale manufacturing. “At present, we have secured orders for 45 units, and our production schedule is fully booked through December.”
Wang Jun, the deputy general manager in charge of operations at Tianyi Industrial, told reporters that as of the end of April, the company had delivered 16 top drive systems to domestic and international customers, including PetroChina, Sinopec, and Russian firms, generating revenue of RMB 90 million—a 9.4% year-on-year increase.
