On the morning of July 4, 2016, good news emerged from the new-product appraisal meeting for the “D-Guider Rotary Steerable Drilling System” held in Beijing: the D-Guider rotary steerable drilling system, independently developed by Panjin Liaohe Oilfield Tianyi Petroleum Equipment Co., Ltd., successfully passed the product appraisal and received high praise from the experts on the appraisal committee.
Academician Su Yinao of the Chinese Academy of Engineering stated that this technology has not only successfully developed a rotary steerable drilling system with China’s independent intellectual property rights, meeting the needs of domestic oil and gas exploration and development, but has also broken the monopoly of foreign companies in the high-end directional‑well market. As a result, it has significantly narrowed the gap with world‑leading standards, reduced crude‑oil extraction costs, and enhanced the competitiveness of China’s drilling industry in the international market.

Rotary steerable systems are among the most advanced directional drilling tools currently developed worldwide, representing a cutting-edge technology in the oil‑drilling industry that integrates mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and information‑processing components. They epitomize the highest level of innovation in contemporary drilling equipment. At present, domestic rotary steerable drilling systems are primarily employed in oilfield operations involving highly deviated wells, horizontal wells, and multilateral wells. Due to technological barriers imposed by foreign manufacturers—who offer only technical services without selling the systems—their market share is dominated by a handful of large multinational oil‑equipment firms, and the cost of these services remains prohibitively high, severely constraining the development of domestic directional‑drilling technology.
In May 2008, Tianyi Company began focusing on the rotary steerable drilling project. By October of the same year, it had established a research and development plan for a rotary steerable drilling system. With no prior experience or technology to draw upon, the company embarked on an arduous journey—from scratch to excellence, from individual components to complete assembly, and from in‑factory testing to field trials. After eight years of relentless exploration and numerous on‑site tests, the system ultimately delivered outstanding performance. This system has directly enhanced oilfield production capacity, reduced extraction costs, and achieved domestic production of rotary steerable drilling systems, making a significant contribution to increasing reserves, stabilizing output, and supporting the company’s sustainable development.
